Pre-Seminar tour in Venice, Monday, 15 – Tuesday, 16 March
organised by Ca' Foscari University Library, Venice

Ca' Foscari University Library is in the process of an extensive building program. The overall idea is to consolidate the 32 libraries distributed all over Venice into five major sites. The two first libraries will be opened early 2004. We visited.

  • The "Biblioteca Didattica". This Library is scheduled for opening in Spring 2004. Formerly a wood and carpenter's warehouse
  • The Università Ca'Foscari di Venezia Library "S. Giobbe" (School of Economic). Housed on the ground and in the buildings of the former slaughterhouse of Venice , it is a daring but still unfinished project. The Library will be completed in fall 2004; the whole area is located on the western edge of the city

Other visits included The Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia in S. Maria Formosa, which today is a library and a museum. Other sites: Fondazione Giorgio Cini on S. Giorgio Island, Biblioteca della Congregazione Armena Mechitarista on Isola di S. Lazzaro degli Armeni, the old library of S. Marco School (in SS Giovanni e Paolo).

The Effective Library – Vision, Planning Process, and Evaluation in the Digital Age

Seminar theme

The theme for the 2002 Seminar considered library planning and design in the context of broader strategic developments affecting teaching and research institutions. The programme reflected on the future role of university libraries, the planning process, and the relationship between librarians and architects. Special emphasis was put on post-completion evaluation programmes – what did reality do to your vision? Did the findings influence further projects? As usual, there were interesting presentations on the latest building projects from across Europe.
The seminar venue was the Leipzig Trade Fair in the outskirts of Leipzig, home of the annual Leipzig Book Fair that took place at the same time.
Among the speakers were G. Bulpitt, V. Robertson, S. Enright, M. Line (GB), F. Breahthnach, M.-Th. Varlamoff, Ch. Micol, M.-F. Bisbrouck (F), L. Borghetti (I), G. Lager (S), B. Lau, M. K. Frandsen (DK), E. Mittler, P. Hoffmann, B. Fabian (D), E. Chrzan, P. Pietka (PL), P.Lapa (BY), W. Treichler, D. McAdam, A. Goda (CH).
The contributions are published in LIBER Quarterly, 2002, No. 3
